Four collegians on Canadian National Junior Team

Four collegians – Boston College’s Dan Bertram, Michigan’s Andrew Cogliano, Cornell’s Sasha Pokulok and North Dakota’s Jonathan Toews – were named to the Canadian National Junior Team that will compete in the 2006 World Junior Championship, Hockey Canada announced Friday.

Four college representatives is a significant spike from recent years, which have typically seen one college player on Team Canada – and last year none made it.

The lone collegian who attended Canada’s selection camp and didn’t make the final cut was Minnesota’s Kris Chucko.

The four who did make it represent four college leagues. Toews, a 1988 birthdate, is the youngest player on the team.

The group will compete in the 2006 World Junior Championship that runs from Dec. 26, 2005, through Jan. 5, 2006, in British Columbia, and will miss their respective holiday tournaments. Also in the tournament are 18 past, present or future college players who are on the U.S. National Junior Team.
