Over There

Martin St. Louis plays in Lausanne, Switzerland.

With the National Hockey League owners and the NHL Players Association in the midst of a bitter impasse with regard to the collective bargaining agreement, a number of players — sensing no end to the current stalement — are plying their trades in European leagues.

As of right now, 31 former collegians who would otherwise be skating in the NHL are playing overseas. Sweden is the most popular destination, with nine players there, while five skaters have joined teams in Germany and Switzerland. Two programs have four players apiece moonlighting in Europe — Michigan (Mike Comrie, Mike Knuble, Brendan Morrison and Marty Turco) and St. Cloud State (Tyler Arnason, Matt Cullen, Ryan Malone and Duvie Westcott).
