Go-To Guys: Goaltender of the Year

Last week: Rookie of the Year
Feb. 17:
Th
e Spencer Penrose Award
Feb. 10:
Th
e Hobey Baker Award

The days of the quirky goaltender are over – at least that's what goalies like to tell you. Then again, they could be excused for their idiosyncracies, since it's the most important, high-pressure position in the game. How would you like it if 10,000 people compared you to a kitchen utensil? Luckily for the goalies on this list, they haven't faced that comparison too often.

Inside College Hockey editors and staff, in consultation with coaches and media from around the country, compiled this list of how we would vote for the Goaltender of the Year Award today – not necessarily how we think the races will turn out. And stay tuned, because a lot can change each weekend; we'll continue our looks at the sport's top individual honors as the season progresses.

GOALTENDER OF THE YEAR – March 2, 2004
1. Yann Danis
Brown
1.70 GAA and a .946 save percentage for a team that ranks 40th in scoring offense.
15-9-4, 1.70, .946
2. Jim Howard
Maine
Had he not stepped on a puck in warmups in December, we might be referring to Howard as the standout goaltender from the 2004 World Junior Championships.
8-3-3, 1.27, .949
3. Bernd Brückler
Wisconsin
Leads WCHA in save percentage and second in GAA. Evolved from a question mark at the start of the season to the team's MVP.
17-7-7, 2.16, .924
4. David Brown
Notre Dame
Miller Lite? The freshman's ability to smother shots and steer rebounds away from harm reminds some of the former Michigan State Hobey Baker Award winner.
13-5-3, 2.03, .933
5. Steve Silverthorn
Colgate
When he's on, the ECAC champion Raiders win. Silverthorn has been in goal for 16 of the team's 19 victories, and gave up two or fewer goals in all but two of those W's.
13-8-6, 1.73 GAA, .924 sv. pct.
Poised to change on the fly David McKee, Cornell; Jordan Sigalet, Bowling Green; Frank Doyle, Maine; Adam Berkhoel, Denver; Al Montoya, Michigan
On the radar Isaac Reichmuth, Minnesota Duluth; Nathan Marsters, Rensselaer; Dominic Vicari, Michigan State; Matti Kaltiainen, Boston College; Bobby Goepfort, Providence; Jake Brandt, North Dakota
